Mobile Phone Distribution

Prior to the tsunami in Aceh the majority of landlines were down and phone calls or other modes of contact was practically nonexistent, consequently making mobile phones the primary means of communication.  Family care allocated funding for 100 mobile phones to give to selected individuals. These included volunteers from the local branch of the Red Cross (PMI); teachers, many of whom slept of the floor of their simple schools since their houses had been destroyed; and several other people, all of whom we have identified as helping many others in the region.

Recovery and relocation of boats that have been carried inland by the tsunami is another project that Family Care has been involved in.

Mobile School

We are in the process of furbishing and outfitting 3 buses to operate as a mobile school and play units to bring educational fun and interaction to displaced children in the temporary housing areas around Banda Aceh.

These buses will be furnished with a library, a group of teachers, librarians and assistants, and a mobile theatre for exhibiting children’s educational programs. This project will serve to provide children’s and adult's reading material to smaller towns and villages which do not have anything like that at this time.  Once the buses are completed and functional they will follow the route of the mobile clinic combining the educational and medical services.

Distribution of Aid

While our main focus is usually on a more physiological level, that of encouraging the victims and trying to give them hope, trauma counseling for both adults and children and giving moral support, we also invest a good deal of our time collecting and distributing aid to the needy.
